[edit] History
Hamm AG was founded by brothers Franz and Anton Hamm in 1878. The company was established in Tirschenreuth, Germany as an agricultural equipment manufacturer.[1]
In 1911 the company designed and built the first diesel-powered road roller.[2]
As road networks improved, new road construction techniques and modern machines needed to be developed. So, in 1928 Hamm AG decided to focus all its energy on designing and manufacturing rollers.[3]
By 1932 Anton’s son Alois had developed and patented the first tandem roller with all-wheel drive (AWD) and all-wheel steering. Hamm AG retained the patent until 1970.[4]
Hamm AG introduced a rubber-wheeled roller with AWD and all-wheel steering in 1963. It was used on the construction of the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal.[5]
Twenty years later Hamm AG developed the oscillating method of compaction because new road surfaces and coatings required a more sensitive style of compaction. Unlike normal vibratory rolling, which compacts material through vertical vibration, the oscillating method keeps the compacting drum in permanent contact with the ground.[6]
The first oscillatory rollers were introduced in 1989.[7]
In 1992 Hamm AG began producing a hydrostatic soil stabilizer and recycler.[8]
In 1998 the company introduced the HD series articulated tandem vibration/combination roller line.[9]
In 2000 Hamm AG officially became a member of the Wirtgen Group, which also includes Wirtgen, Vögele, and Kleemann.[10]
[edit] Awards
The Hamm AG 3000 series was awarded the Innovationspreis des Deutschen Baumaschinentages prize at BAUMA in Munich in 2001.[11]
The DV series tandem roller line received the Red Dot Design Award and the Golden iF in 2004.[12]
The compact line of tandem rollers was awarded the Red Dot Design Award and Golden iF in 2007.[13]
