Jet Fuel
From RitchieWiki
Jet fuel is a high-quality, kerosene-based fuel product used to fuel gas turbine engines used in commercial aircraft.[1]
Today, there are mainly two types of kerosene fuel used in commercial aircraft known as Jet A-1 and Jet A. A wider cut of kerosene comprising a blend of kerosene and gasoline known as Jet B fuel is used in colder temperatures. Jet A-1, a kerosene grade fuel, is suitable for most almost all gas turbine engine aircraft and is produced according to stringent international standards and regulations. Jet A is a similar type of kerosene fuel to Jet A-1 but is produced to ASTM specifications and available only in the U.S. whereas Jet A-1 is widely produced outside the U.S. Jet B fuel is used as an alternative to Jet A-1 fuel but is more difficult to handle and used primarily in colder temperature climates.[2]
A separate classification of jet fuel exists for military aircraft and these include JP-4, JP-5, and JP-8 grades of kerosene-based fuel. Special additives in small quantities can also be added to jet fuel to improve or enhance its quality.[3]
