(Redirected from Opencast mining)
Opencast mining is the mining and extraction of coal or ore at the surface. The term is also used interchangeably with open-pit mining, stripping, and open-cut mining.[1]
In some circles, "opencast mining" can also be used to define the totality of all operations in an open-pit mine. These stages include mine surface preparation, excavation, stripping, and the removal of overburden, the mining, extraction, haulage and unloading of ore, coal, or other minerals, to development work that extends the mine's production lifecycle and possible transition to an underground mining operation.[2]
