Overburden

Overburden is the material that covers valuable and sought-after ore deposits, such as gold and silver. A term used in mining applications, overburden usually consists of waste rock and soil that is disposed of or used as backfill when mining is complete. Overburden is usually found in open pit mines and is removed with excavating equipment such as stripping shovels and excavators.
