Stripping ratio is a mining term that refers to the amount of waste measured in tons that is removed from an open-pit mine. A stripping ratio of 3:1, for example, means that during the mining process, three times as much waste rock as ore will be mined.

Stripping ratios are important because they help mining outfits determine whether the costs of mining a site are worthwhile in terms of the profit that can be gained from the ore deposit.[1]
