A frame is the main component of a vehicle chassis. The other components of a chassis, such as the engine, wheels, transmission, steering apparatus, and brakes, are fastened to the frame.
Frames are available in several designs:
- C-shape
- Boxed
- Hat
The C-shape frame is the most common, used on most vehicles. The c-shaped frame is made of a single piece of flat steel that is rolled from side to side to form the shape of a C. The C frame spans the length of the vehicle.
The shape of the boxed frame derives from welding to c-shaped frames together to form a box.
The hat frame is in the shape of a U and is commonly inverted but can also be pointed in the opposite direction. They are no longer used, as they have a tendency to rust.
