The Caterpillar 205 hydraulic excavator was introduced in 1984. It was manufactured in Germany only.

The 205 comes standard with a variable flow hydraulic system, pilot-operated controls, and a long undercarriage.

The 205 was manufactured in Germany, with a 3HC or 4DC serial number prefix.

The 3HC has a Deutz F4L912 engine; the 4DC has a Perkins 4.236 engine producing 71 flywheel horsepower (FWHP).

In 1985 and 1986 Caterpillar modified the cab, beginning with 3HC00137 and 4DC00241. At the same time the 4DC unit had its boom tower modified and its upper windshield laminated.

In 1987 Cat made the boom nose stronger, beginning with 4DC00448.

Production of 205 ended in 1990; it was replaced by the Caterpillar 205B.

Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 1,200 Caterpillar 205 hydraulic excavators have been produced.
