The Caterpillar 424D loader backhoe was introduced in 2001. It was manufactured in England only.

The 424D has pilot stabilizer controls, a high rotation backhoe linkage, and hydraulic pump that delivers fluid at a rate of 35 gallons (133 L) per minute (GPM) at a system pressure of 3,000 pounds per square inch (PSI) (20,684 kPa).

The 424D is available as a standard frame width unit, with a BGP serial number prefix, or as a narrow frame unit, with a BKR prefix.

In 2003 production of BGP and BKR units ended.

In 2004 Caterpillar introduced 424D Series II. Standard frame, Series II units have a RXA prefix; narrow frame units have a CJZ prefix.

Production of 424D II ended in 2005.

Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 200 Caterpillar 424D/424D Series II loader backhoes have been produced.
