The Caterpillar 980G Series II wheel loader was introduced in 2000 in the USA and France as the replacement for the Caterpillar 980G. Production began in Japan in 2003.

The 980G II has a 3406E air-to-air after cooled engine producing 300 horsepower (HP). It comes standard with electronic controls, freewheel stator torque converter, and a modified cab with reduced sound levels.

The 980G II was manufactured in the USA, with an AWH serial number prefix; in France, with an AXG prefix; and in Japan, with an AYT prefix.

The Caterpillar 980G II was replaced by the Caterpillar 980H.

Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 3977 Caterpillar 980G Series II wheel loaders have been produced.
